Finland’s National Coalition Party wins elections

Prime Minister Sanna Marin’s Social Democratic Party finishes in third place

With almost all of the vote counted, the Liberal-Conservative National Coalition Party (Kokoomus) has emerged as the winners of Sunday’s general election in Finland. As a result, a new prime minister is expected to be appointed soon. 10 extra parliament seats were won by the veteran politician Antti Petteri Orpo and his party, which received 20.8 percent of the vote, according to public broadcaster YLE. This gave them a total of 48 seats out of the 200 available.

The 2019 general election saw this achievement. Winning 46 seats, up from 39 in 2019, the Finns Party (PS) achieved 20.1 percent of the vote, being a right-wing populist. Prime Minister Sanna Marin’s Social Democratic Party (SDP) was awarded 43 seats and 19.9% of the vote, ranking third. The Left Alliance experienced a 7.1 percent decrease as they lost 5 of their 11 seats. The Agrarian Center Party also took a hit, losing 8 out of 31 seats, which added up to an 11.4 percent decrease. In the 2019 general election, the Greens only won 20 seats with a mere 7 percent of the vote. However, this year they were able to flip the script and secure 13 seats- quite the improvement!
